Habits of Successful People: Hardworking

  • Sharebar

This is my next post in the habits of successful people series. I hope you enjoyed the last one which was about resilience. Today, we will be talking about work, not just work, hard work. Human beings naturally don’t want to work, people would prefer to stay at home and lazy about. But the world that we live in today requires that we work if you want pay for your bills and take care of your family. Even the New King James Version of the Bible says in 2 Thessalonians 3:10 “For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat.”

Drop the get rich quick mentality?

A lot of people have big dreams of getting rich very quickly and at a very young age. Who wouldn’t? That’s why we have a lot of problems in our society today. When this dream of becoming rich quickly doesn’t become a reality, they then turn to various criminal and inconvenient acts such as stealing, drug peddling and compulsive gambling among other things. Even financial executives gamble with funds by making crazy investments in order to get a quick profit for shareholders, just one of the reasons we had the recession about two years ago. Lets flush this mentality from our minds. Its good to be rich, but if you’re going to be rich, do it right and don’t bring your family name in to disrepute. The New Living Translation of the Bible says in Proverbs 22:1 “Choose a good reputation over great riches; being held in high esteem is better than silver or gold.” I strongly believe that it’s a good thing to live with a peaceful mind without looking over your shoulder every time to check out if the police is coming after you. A life on the run isn’t as fabulous and exciting as movies make it out to be.

Talent is not enough

A lot of people also have the impression that their talents will open doors for them automatically. That isn’t necessarily true. You may need to work hard at your trade to get the big break that you need. You may love what you do, but it can be so frustrating when nobody is willing to appreciate or recognize your work after all the tears, sweat and blood you have put into it, especially when it’s not bringing in the desired income. You may just feel like giving up and finding something else to do. You just have to be patient. There are a lot of great novelists whose works have been rejected up to thirty times by different publishers before they got their big break. It doesn’t mean they were any less talented. They just had to put in more effort. The difference between stars and average people isn’t talent, it’s just that stars were willing to put in more work to achieve their goals and perfect their skills. I can’t begin to imagine how many times David Beckham practiced free kicks in a day before he became a legend in taking free kicks.

Success is no excuse to be lazy

It’s difficult to become a champion, it’s more difficult to maintain and defend your championship. A lot of successful people and businessmen are workaholics. I’m not saying you shouldn’t rest and have time for leisure, but make sure you’re still as devoted to your work as ever, or everything could slip away easily. Being self-employed is not a ticket to work anytime or when you want to, you have to work when its required of you to work. You could lose opportunities and clients with that behavior. You’d be surprised that a lot of the world’s top CEO s are punctual and still work very hard. They have a strict routine that they stick to religiously. Some work late into the night and do whatever it takes to get the job done. If the company they own comes crashing down, they know personally they may survive financially, but a lot of families that depend on salaries from those companies are in a whole lot of financial trouble. These men have a tremendous weight on their shoulders and they know what is at stake and the buck stops with them. Hard work  is a culture for men of success, make it a culture for yourself as well.

I really hope that this post has touched you in one way or the other. Work hard and have a nice time.

Cheers
